Islamabad: With the intention of bringing healthy lifestyle, the federal government is planning to levy ‘Gunah Tax’ on Cigarettes and carbonated drinks.
Details reveal that government is planning to impose new taxes on cigarettes and carbonated drinks. According to planning the tax imposed on carbonated drinks will be Rs 2 per 100 ml bottle of beverage and Rs 5 to 15 on each packet of cigarettes.
In justification to the new law, govt explained that cigarettes are injurious to health and causing fatal disease and carbonated drinks cause diabetes.
It is said by an official from health department that money acquired through this new taxation policy will be utilized in benefiting the health sector.
It should be noted that federal government is presiding high level meetings to look into various options in this regard.
This step is likely to escalate cigarette prices and earning through the new tax is estimated to be huge. It should be noted that these kind of taxes have already been imposed in some of the European countries and in Philippines it is imposed under Sin Tax Reform bill.
Statistically, around four billions of cigarette packs are sold across the country each year.
