Senate panel cancels meeting over minister’s absence

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Water Resources called of meeting in protest over the absence of the minister on Monday, including federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda.

The meeting was led by Chairman Senator Shamim Afridi who took serious notice regarding the absence of the minister, secretary of water resources ministry Shumail Khwaja and chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Syed Muzammil Hussain.

“The committee expressed dissatisfaction over this behaviour,” reads a statement. He said that water crisis issue on a high priority these days and is neglected by the ministers as their behaviour tells, “this non-serious attitude towards parliamentary committee sitting to discuss the matter”.

A meeting has been scheduled on December 20 and it was decided that this issue should be taken to senate so that no similar cases rises.

Senator Badini stated that ministries are not taking this forum seriously and unable to fulfil their responsibilities. He said the officers of the water resources ministry and Wapda did not realise how importance Senate committees are.

Moreover, senator Afridi said that minister frequently showed up on TV talk show but is unable to come where he is required to come and speak.

Although the joint secretary informed committee that two of them will not be able to make up to it because of their personal engagements but committee refused to hear their statements.
