Two PML-N senators disqualified, dual nationality issue


Islamabad: On Wednesday two PML-N senators disqualified by the Supreme Court for holding dual nationalities.

The Premier court said, “Sadia Abbasi and Haroon Akhtar had dual-citizenships when they filed their nomination papers.”

Sadia Abbasi is the sister of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, while Haroon Akhtar has served as the adviser of revenue to the prime minister. The two belong to PML-N.

The actions were taken keeping ion mind the constitution, according to article 63(1)(C) of the Constitution: ‘A person may be disqualified if he or she owns the Citizenship of Pakistan and any other country’.

On March 5, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar had ordered the election commission of Pakistan to reserve the announcement of notificationsd of the victory of four senators after they were accused of holding dual nationalities. The list included  Sadia Abbasi, Haroon Akhtar, Nuzhat Sadiq, and Chaudhry Sarwar.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has been asked by the Supreme court to notify.
