LHC directs govt to respond to petitions against Basant festival

Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) directed the Punjab government on Tuesday  to submit comments on petitions challenging its plan to celebrate Basant festival in the province.

A bench of directed the government to submit its response regarding the petition until Jan 24. A state lawyer told the court that the provincial government has not yes taken decision to celebrate the festival and that a committee on the issue had been formed.

Previously, Punjab government announced to lift ban on the Basant festival stating that it will be held in February and it lures tourist into the country.

Subsequently, a number of citizens filed petition against the LHC decision to uplift the ban,and urged that no festivity that is celebrated on the expense of Human life must not be celebrated.

They requested the court to turn down the government’s decision to arrange this festival in the province

Basant festival was banned during the PML-N government when certain incidents of throat cutting of motorcyclists and kids were occurred due to very fine glass and chemical coated string

In 2005, the Supreme Court officially banned the festival over deaths caused by the use of sharp and glass coated strings.
