Nawaz Sharif, Maryam appear before NAB court despite exemption

ISLAMABAD: The Accountability Court resumed hearing of corruption cases against Sharif family today (Wednesday) as the ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam showed up at the court despite the fact they got exemption from personal appearance.

In a motorcade of seven vehicles, Nawaz Sharif arrived at the court from Islamabad airport amidst strict security arrangements.

In today’s hearing, Nawaz Sharif’s sons — Hassan and Hussain Nawaz– are expected to be declared as Proclaimed Offenders.

The National Accountability Court (NAB) court will hold today 15th hearing of Flagship Investment Ltd., Hill Metal, Alazizia Steel Mills and London Flats references.

Four more witnesses of the prosecution will get their statement recorded before the court in today’s hearing. And, Defence Counsel Khawaja Haris will cross-question them.

In previous hearing, Sidra Mansoor and Jahangir Ahmed were cross-questioned while their statement was recorded.

During the previous hearing, the NAB court of Judge Muhammed Bashir allowed Nawaz Sharif one-week exemption and Maryam for a month after the two requested the court for the purpose. They said they have to tend to ailing Kulsoom Nawaz, who is hospitalized in London for medical treatment of her lymphoma.

In last hearing also, Nawaz Sharif’s sons were also declared absconders over their continuous absence in the case.

It is pertinent to note here that former premier is nominated in references of Avenfield properties, Alazizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investment; however, Maryam and her husband Captain (rted.) Safdar are nominated in reference regarding Avenfield properties alone.

It is Nawaz Sharif’s seventh appearance before the Accountability Court and Maryam Nawaz an her husband’s ninth.

The NAB court formally indicted Nawaz Sharif during his fifth appearance on November 8 in all three corruption references separately. However, he denied all the charges pleading not guilty and said that the proceeding was initiated on political grounds.
