Head of the Russian Defense Production Agency Sergey Chemezov said that India has paid $ 800m in advance to buy the Russian S-400 defense missile system.

It is reported that the Indian government made this deal with Russia against US wishes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a BRICS meeting in Brazil last week.

President Putin later said in a media briefing, “As far as the supply of S440 is concerned, everything is going according to plan. Our Indian colleagues did not talk about the quick delivery and everything was going well.”

US President Donald Trump reacted strongly to the deal. The US warned India that it could face US sanctions if it bought the Russian defense system.

India is also the largest buyer of Russian weapons worldwide. In 2015, the Modi government had signed an agreement with Russia under the ‘Make in India’ project on weapons preparation in India, but the project has not yet been fully implemented.
