Pak and US stress for ‘intra-Afghan’ dialogue for peace in country

ISLAMABAD: US Special Envoy for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Thursday called on Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, and discuss progress on the Afghan peace process, at a delegation meeting in Islamabad.

Foreign Office informed that US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad was accompanied by an interagency delegation representing Departments of Defence, State and National Security Council. On the other hand, Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua was accompanied by senior officials from Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Defence.

Mr Khalilzad appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in arranging direct talks between Taliban and the United States in Abu Dhabi last month.

Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua expressed her views at the delegation level meeting and reiterated Pakistan’s promise to facilitate Afghan peace-talks process for maintaining peace and the stability in the region.

“Taking the Afghan peace process forward remains a shared responsibility”, she contented.

Both sides agreed to the fact that peace is vital for future and Afghan policy should be made so that peace is easily maintained in their land and neighbours.

Ambassador Khalilzad will meet Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi tomorrow in Islamabad.
