President Donald Trump is ready to meet Hassan Rouhani

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump is ready to meet his Iranian President Hassan Rouhani without conditions while maintaining “maximum pressure” on Tehran, United State (US) Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Tuesday.

“Now the president has made clear, he is happy to take a conference without conditions, but we are preserving the maximum pressure campaign,” Mnuchin said, just days after Iran said it had fired up strainers to boost its developed uranium stocks.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, standing along with Mnuchin in the White House meeting room, said “sure” when asked whether US President could meet Rouhani later this month on the secondary activity of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The comments came just 90 minutes after Trump proclaimed that he had detached John Bolton as his national security advisor.

But Mnuchin zapped away ideas that the retreat of the hawkish Bolton could indicate a more reasonable Iran policy, as the management announced new terrorist descriptions against leaders of several governments with close ties to Tehran.

The authorizations apply to commanders or senior leaders of groups as well as Iran´s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force, Hezbollah, the operational arm of Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

“You know we´ve done more sanctions on Iran than anyone, and it´s completely working,” Mnuchin said.

“I would say Secretary Pompeo and myself and the president are completely allied on our maximum pressure campaign.”
