Punjab govt terms family’s killing in Sahiwal encounter ‘collateral damage’

Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat termed the killing of three members of the family during police encounter in Sahiwal as’ “collateral damage” that was conducted as a result of security personnel’s attempt to remove a suspected terrorist who along with his aides could cause damage.

While talking to media alongside the members of the cabinet, Raja Basharat told the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) officials did not wish to “directly” harm the deceased family during the operation conducted on Saturday.

But the operation ended in Mutual damage when Khalil’s neighbour and friend Zeeshan was targeted who the minister said had links with Daesh, a protest organization.

The elite Punjab force killed four people on Saturday in what they termed as the police encounter, including parents Khalil and Nabeela, their teenage daughter, and neighbour Zeeshan, This news sent shock across the country as the video got viral.

A joint investigation team (JIT) is assigned a duty to investigate the ‘encounter’ and findings will be presented to the Punjab government within three days, he said, adding that a FIR had been filed at the family’s request.
