After the National Assembly, the upper house (Senate) too approved the Pakistan Army, Navy, Air Force Act Amendment Bill 2020 with a majority vote.
The Senate meeting chaired by Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani was attended by Defense Minister Pervez Khattak, Law Minister Farogh Naseem, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Swati and other members, but former Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani was not present in the House.
The National Assembly and the defence committees of both houses have already approved the bill. On Wednesday, Pakistan Muslim League-N and the PPP also announced their support for the bill in the upper house. The Senate approved the Service Chiefs Act, Amendment Bill with a majority vote.
The amended bills are named as Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill 2020, Pakistan Navy (Amendment) Bill 2020 and Pakistan Air Force (Amendment) Bill 2020.
Later in the meeting, Senator Waleed Iqbal presented the report on the three amended bills of the standing committee defence.
4 Senators from the National Party opposed and one Senator Dr Ashok Kumar supported the bill.
In addition, the Jamaat-e-Islami, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) and the Pashtun Milli Awami Party (PKMip) staged a protest and walked out of the House.
After the passage of bills, Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani adjourned the upper house meeting till Friday, January 10 at 10.30 am.
It should be noted that the entire Senate process was completed in just 20 minutes and no other agenda was discussed in the House.
