After the passage of the Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force Act Amendment Bills 2020 in the National Assembly, the bills will be introduced in the Senate while the Senate’s defence committee approved it.
The legislation, titled the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Act 2020, will result in the retirement of the heads of the three Armed Forces and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee to 64 years.
In addition to this, the Prime Minister will have the privilege of extending his term of office after serving up to 60 years in the future, which will be finalized by the President.
According to the bill presented in National Assembly, Section 8 A, B, C, D, E, F will be included in the Army Act whereas Section 8 C states that the minimum retirement age of a general and the minimum age of employment shall not apply during the deployment, reappointment and extension of the Chief of Army Staff, and the maximum age will be 64 years.
In this regard, the official said that amendments to the Army Act could not be challenged in any court of law.
It should be noted that on November 28, 2019, the Supreme Court had ruled that Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa would be the head of the Pak army for the next 6 months, during which the government should legislate on the extension and deployment of the army chief through parliament.
